I recently underwent another electrolysis treatment – this time, from a new provider! I’ve been going for nearly 2.5 years now, and unfortunately, while I have experienced permanent hair removal in some areas, my progress has been slow.
For those who do not know, electrolysis is the process of inserting a fine needle into a hair follicle and destroying it completely (and permanently!) by electric current. As your hair is constantly at different stages of growth, it can be a lengthy process as individual hairs are targeted.
Sounds awful, doesn’t it? Apparently, it’s not supposed to be nearly as painful as past treatments I’ve undergone. I would honestly rate this most recent session as a 1-2 out of 10 on the pain scale compared to the 9-10 I’ve been dealing with!
Let me reiterate that electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method available. There is no device on the market that can deliver these results.
While we’re at it, let’s review the other methods out there…
Did you know that laser hair removal is only guaranteed to greatly reduce hair regrowth?
This process combines light and heat until the hair follicle is damaged or destroyed. Many people don’t realize that this mode of hair removal requires several treatments, typically a minimum of 6, and ongoing maintenance appointments.
The handheld devices that are frequently promoted on TikTok are not mini-laser machines. They’re actually IPLs- intense pulsed light.
IPL is not recommended for hair removal. Even worse, the at-home devices are very low energy and, ultimately, ineffective if you’re looking for long-term results.
With these two methods, those with blonde or gray hair (too light to detect) and darker skin tones (severe burn risk) cannot be treated. Electrolysis does not have those same restrictions and, in my opinion, is an overall better value for the money you’re investing.
More about my most recent treatment…
At this new office, the level of care was unparalleled!
Following my session, she did a quick cataphoresis treatment using a metal probe to soothe the skin and nerves, reduce redness, and disinfect the area. This was a game-changer! I highly recommend that if you choose to schedule your own electrolysis treatments, ensure your provider will give you this aftercare. It made such a difference in my healing.
It goes to show that the right tools in the hands of the right provider really make a difference!
Her last step was to apply sunscreen (Pro tip: a sign of a great service provider is if they end your treatment with sunscreen!) I was blown away by the product she used.
A lightweight, tinted moisturizer sunscreen. There are quite a few out there by so many quality brands. I sampled several in esthetician school alone!
This one went on so smoothly, covering any unevenness in my skin tone and staying put for the rest of the day. I love the idea of wearing as little makeup as I can get away with!
While I am all about brand loyalty and have been an avid user of SkinBetter’s Sunbetter Tone Smart Sunscreen, Image’s sunscreen was admittedly better. The moment I got home, I signed up to work with this brand.
I also had no idea about the options they offered, including tinted and untinted serums, lotions, and even an SPF mist! With this selection, there’s no excuse to go without your sun protection!
